SAP Profitability and Cost Management (PCM) 7.5 reached the end of support maintenance in December 2013. Whilst many SAP PCM users have already upgraded, for variety of reasons some have postponed their upgrade.

Mostly the reasons behind such a postponement might be good ones, however often there is a perception upgrading is a lengthy and costly process. This is not necessarily the case as it is strongly individual for each organisation.

By not upgrading, companies are taking a risk as SAP Support is no longer available to clients who experience issues and problems with version 7.5.

In addition SAP PCM 10 offers plenty of new features and enhancements which users are missing out on and which could improve and assist with business change, requirements and needs.

There have been 8 released Support Packs since SAP PCM 10 became available to PCM customers.
Here is information covering most interesting and value adding enhancements which organisations can benefit from upon upgrading to SAP PCM 10.

Which version of SAP PCM does this SAP PCM 10 replace?

SAP PCM v10 replaces SAP PCM v7.5

Why should I upgrade to SAP PCM 10?

As mentioned above, support for SAP PCM 7.5 is now out of maintenance. So if you experience problems with your current PCM version it will be very costly for you to achieve resolution to these problems.

Moreover, SAP PCM 10 offers, not only enhancements to existing functionalities, but also fundamentally new value-adding functionalities. These new functionalities add value to different user groups and are not solely beneficial for developers (model builders) but also for end users.

Is direct migration from SAP PCM 7.5 to SAP PCM 10 straightforward and easy?

Yes, all your SAP PCM models can be migrated from PCM 7.5 to PCM 10. Databases are copied and upgraded afterwards to SAP PCM 10.

What new functionalities and enhancements could help model builders?

Advanced rule manager

The new rule manager makes rule debugging much easier, reduces development time and increases reliability.

  • Time and test the retrieval of results which might be related to a rule
  • Ability to view all results which might be related to a specific rule
  • Filter on individual rules within a model
  • Easier de-bugging
  • Trace dependencies between rules.

PCM export to SAP HANA

SAP PCM 10 provides the ability to export model parent / child structure, export IDs, and results to a SAP HANA database for Profitability and Bill of Materials model types. The benefit is improvement on reporting time and overall analytics calculations in HANA using SAP PCM data.

CPU usage increased to 64 CPUs

In the model calculation options dialog box, users can now select up to 64 CPUs as the “maximum CPU usage” setting.

Bill of Materials costing

The new Bill of Materials functionality allows you to cost individual sub-products, and then define your end-products in terms of the quantities of sub-products that make them up. This brings a new level of detail and sophistication to modelling in SAP PCM

What new functionalities and enhancements could help the end users?

New functionality to export data view

The new "export data view" screen allows the user to select an existing view that was created in "view builder" and use it to define the layout of a data export. This extends the ability of PCM to export data and results to external applications or data warehouses.

New grid styles

  • In ‘view builder’, “grid styles” feature allows you to create custom grid styles that can be reused across multiple grids and applied across different books
  • Users who view grids can select “user preferences” to enable or disable custom grids. Security settings can be adjusted.

EPM add-in to SAP BO PCM

  • Ability to use Excel for SAP PCM access, amendments and reporting
  • SAP PCM data is pulled from the model in real-time
  • Access model data via the SAP EPM add in Excel and create a report that contains editable values. You can then change those values, click ‘submit data’ and the changes are sent back to SAP PCM. The changes can be seen in ‘view builder’ and 'data explorer’
  • SAP EPM add-in use for reporting data and pulling data from SAP PCM and SAP BPC
  • Easy transfer of data from SAP BPC to SAP PCM (via copy-paste)
  • Rules diversification – some of SAP PCM rules for calculations can be directly created in Excel
  • Greater visibility, productivity and traceability
  • Prerequisite for using EPM add-in - Microsoft Excel with add-in functionality

Multiple system connectivity

Users can now log on to different database within SAP PCM. This gives flexibility to the users to login directly to the server required.

New cost tracing feature

Context menu options allow you to perform cost tracing on specific types of grid values. This functionality is available in view in the web client, model builder and book viewer.

Performing cost tracing on a drill-down level to the target values that it is assigned to or to the source values from which it is originated. Consolidated grid value can also be selected to drill down on the consolidated dimensions before performing a trace. The results are displayed in a new view from which you may be able to launch further cost tracing.

Is there additional license/support cost to move from SAP PCM 7.5 to SAP PCM 10?

There is no additional license/support cost to move from SAP PCM 7.5 to SAP PCM 10 however, there may be some implementation and training costs involved to leverage some of the new features.
