Making Gamification simple with SAP HANA Cloud Platform

Whilst some might think that Gamification is a concept that has been and gone, the technology that is available means it has never been easier to get on board.

John-Murray-Making-Gamification-simple-with-SAP-HANA-Cloud.jpgGamification in the business environment is not a new concept; it has been in existence in one form or another for several years. In 2011, for example, the VW Group invited consumers to create the “People’s car” through a tool which let them design a car and then show it off to others. Within a mere 10 weeks their website had been visited over 33 million times and they had more than 50,000 creations.

The Gartner Hype Cycle

Success stories like this are not hard to find, so much so that in 2014 the Gartner Hype Cycle placed Gamification over the "peak of inflated expectations" and at the beginning of the downward slope into the "trough of disillusionment". Interestingly however, in 2015 Gamification has been removed entirely from the Hype Cycle chart. Some have suggested that this means it has disembarked from the hype train after reaching its destination of the "plateau of productivity" early.

Personally, I think this is rather wishful thinking and a more likely reason is that they needed to save a bit of space on their chart this year. Assuming this is the real reason, we can use a bit of light extrapolation and find Gamification well on its way into the "trough of disillusionment". 

So just why exactly am I writing about something which is in arguably the most negative stage of the Hype Cycle? Well, it’s because I firmly believe that now is the perfect time for you to get a head start on the competition and integrate Gamification into your business. Unlocking the full 360-degree view of your customers and employees, and subsequently driving real and measurable business benefit.

The reason I believe now is the time to get on board with Gamification is that, thanks to the SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP), Gamification is now closer than ever before. The SAP HCP Gamification Service is a module which recently left Beta testing and is now a subscription option on all SAP HCP accounts. This Service has all the foundations required to get Gamification up and running for you, allowing for easy management of the important stuff – your game rules and the resulting analytics. By providing customers with these foundations, a considerable portion of the time, cost and associated risk involved in getting set up has been removed.

All of this, plus the fact that the HCP Gamification Service imposes no restrictions, means that you can focus on perfecting your games and getting them integrated into your new or existing applications, all with the target audience one hundred percent in mind. So whilst those around you are fumbling around in the dark of the trough, you do not need to worry as SAP have got you covered with the HCP beacon of light.

To unlock the maximum business benefit though, we also must not forget that all of this new ability can be combined with the existing powers of SAP HCP. For example, the Internet of Things service which allows you to integrate your applications into a multitude of platforms and get your game in the best place possible for it. There is also the SAP HANA Predictive Analytics Library (PAL), which will enable you to take all of this incredible data you are gathering from your audience and find accurate trends and forecasts in real-time.
