The Automated Enterprise is your business on it’s best day. This is the idea started by Daniel Wilde soon after he joined Bluefin. As we have discovered, a lot of people are interested in the Automated Enterprise to help drive their business through data centricity, innovation and a real time intelligent core. People have focussed on automation using artificial intelligence or machine learning - but is that all that automation actually is in this context, or is there an aspect we have been missing?

When Daniel asked me to think of a demo we could do at SAPPHIRE NOW and the ASUG Annual Conference, my desire was to make our automation physical, to visualise the concept - I wanted to have a robot do something cool which would excite people. I did not realise the journey that this simple idea and desire would bring my team and I on.  Nor did we expect such a  challenge in moving from the virtual world to the physical one.

Most commentators and analysts are talking about how automation is going to take over a significant number of jobs - recent estimates place the number around 800 Million jobs by 2030. So, what what will those 800 million people do next? We believe that people will be freed up to take on higher value tasks, away from mundane ones and the majority of these mundane tasks will be taken by physical devices doing specific roles. This presents a unique opportunity and one which tweaked my inner geek a lot - I have been watching Boston Dynamics and their progressively more impressive robots with great interest.

Going back to our demo, we looked at various scenarios for turning virtual stimuli into physical outcomes. But few of them resonated with the team until I saw a robot lifting items based on image recognition and moving them from place to place. Cozmo was the tangible little device that would make the Automated Enterprise real for everyone.

The diagram below shows the process flow for Cozmo and how it receives instructions from the SAP S/4HANA system, takes action and responds back to the S/4HANA system to continue with business processes:

What Cozmo provides for us in this demo is the ability to give both event driven instructions from the S/4HANA system, and also to provide feedback to the S/4HANA system - all using the SAP Cloud Platform IoT service. Cozmo, in this context, serves as an IoT device; to control and be controlled by the S/4HANA system without human interaction. Outside of this context however, you are only limited by your imagination as to what you can use these services to do - and that is where life gets really exciting.

Are you attending SAPPHIRE NOW and the ASUG Annual Conference 2018? Here are 5 great reasons to visit us on Booth 385. You can also take part in the demo yourself. Whilst you're there, ask us how you can win your very own Cozmo robot.
