Training and Change: Two sides of the same coin

03 Feb 2012 Project Management & Methodology

I often feel that the word 'training' is underestimated. Whereas words like 'change management' immediately spark an interest. I am struggling to extract these 2 words as in my head these are intrinsically linked. If I were to describe the relationship between the two, I would say that training is the vehicle of change.

Change is omnipresent - Training is usually for a day

This means we usually have a day to address the change and manage the resistance. And somewhere in the session, teach the audience the new system or a new process! There is therefore that increased pressure to complete the course as well as ensure that the change has been sufficiently addressed and recognised; and that learning has taken place.

You can perhaps then use training to be the comfortable start to their journey of change. Ensure that the training day leaves them better informed, more comfortable and even excited about the change!

Change and Training - Allow room for both

It is important to identify the scope of both upfront. You need to decide how much emphasis you will place on these 2 elements. I will admit this is a tough call to make. I tend to use the 'introduction' of the course to address the larger change component. I might introduce a story or a personal anecdote which is very similar to what my audience is going through. I have found that it immediately relaxes a crowd. It allows you as a trainer to establish rapport very quickly and gain the trust of your audience as you are indeed addressing the elephant in the room.

Change and Training - We are responsible for both

The seeds of change have already been planted before the training session. Training is ensuring that the right messages are delivered, the correct information is shared and the new way of working is practised. It is giving them the confidence that they have the skills and the knowledge to cope with change

A sign that you have been successful is when you see the seeds of change grow and spread the change!
