Observations from SAP TechEd, Berlin, 2010

03 Nov 2010 Business Intelligence (BI), Mobile, Planning

Having attended TechEd in Berlin this year I really felt there a was a great buzz in the air and people seemed really motivated again. There were a number of areas of interest for me however there are two in particular I'd like to share.

Back-end BI - In-memory

It was obvious that SAP is proud of the acquisition of SyBase and the opportunities that it opens up to them. Let’s hope they manage it better than they did for Business Objects.

I attended a few of the SyBase sessions some key observations for me were:

SyBase opens up the door for SAP to deliver in-memory solutions with the BW Database looking to be the first to benefit, probably closely followed by a Planning Solution that bring together BPC (focussed on the End User Community) and BW-IP (IT tool for developing Planning Applications). The potential opportunities improvement in performance should make this a real winner.

But what does in-memory mean to those of us who design and build Business Warehouses and deliver information to the Information Consumer.  Total re think - I think; “Do I just bring masses of data across in seconds, no need for pre processing / calculation. I can do that in the front end now as performance is no longer an issue” – perhaps! But me thinks I’ll dig a bit deeper first.

The second area I would like to share relates to the “new” Business Objects Analysis tool where I attended a presentation and also a “hands-on” session.

  • In simple terms this looks like Analyser (Excel version) or Voyager (Web – but they didn’t show too much of this!!!!) simplified to place it more in the hands of the End User. And also with a cost to the client.
  • It was very easy to pick up and use.
  • You start with Open Data Source which is currently a query BUT I’m sure will also be the new “Symantec Layer or Business Layer” in time. Talking of which the tool to develop this layer “Information Design Tool” was very flaky – work-in-progress.
