Don’t forget me...I’m the end user!

Business Intelligence (BI), Business Objects, Consumer Business
During the last few projects, a hunch I’ve had for some time, was evidenced. I felt that all too often IT lead projects focused on tools and not present and future needs of the BI end user.
Project teams delivering high quality Business Intelligence projects need to remain focused on both innovative technical wizardry behind the scenes and the needs of the user to do their job more efficiently.
Starting with the end-user

I’ve used the above model a number of times with customers to help them understand their users’ needs and found they were themselves surprised with the resulting tool selection.
At Bluefin Solutions we have a “horses for courses” approach to the selection of SAP BI tools that includes the traditional offerings from SAP as well as the new SAP BusinessObjects technologies.
So when using the above model, you might end up identifying the BEx tools from SAP are appropriate today but depending on the users location of use this might change to SAP BusinessObjects Analysis OLAP edition coming with the next BusinessObjects platform release BI4.0.
So I urge you to start with the user and let their needs define what tools the project uses to meet their information needs.
