Discover what the life of a graduate at Bluefin Solutions is really like

Oliver Rogers (2010)

NetWeaver Consultant

When I left University I was thrust upon with the question of what to do next. Having graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Imperial College I was well placed for a career in technology. However, I had very little business experience and no experience with SAP or consulting.

I’ve always been passionate about finding innovative ways to solve problems using different technologies. I felt that if I joined a large company I’d likely just end up as a developer limited to just one or two technologies. At Bluefin Solutions I use a number of technologies throughout a typical day – and this is early on in my career!

The 6 week boot-camp was fantastic. We were trained up by some of the most experienced consultants in their fields. The follow up project also gave us the opportunity to really sink our teeth into something real and challenging – the output of which was a mobile solution which is now used company wide.

What I didn’t expect was to find a company that was so much fun to work for! The Social Club is great fun and the atmosphere in the office is brilliant. Everyone is really friendly and supportive and always willing to help out if I’m stuck.

Danielle Brannon (2010)

Planning & Performance Management Consultant

Starting out on the job hunt is always a daunting task however, when you find ‘the’ company it makes the long hours of CV tailoring, job spec scanning and profile matching that much more gratifying.

Bluefin Solutions really stood out from the competition because of its customer and employee centric approach. Even the insights/blog section on the website - where employees are given the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and raise their profiles – the investment Bluefin places in its people is evident.

Whilst my background is non-technical (MSc in Management) the training and experience Bluefin Solutions has provided has really prepared me for client projects. Before joining Bluefin I’d never even seen an SAP system – in fact I didn’t even know anything about SAP. However I knew I wanted to build my technical skills and look for a career with diverse client interaction. I was drawn to Bluefin’s varied client portfolio as it spans across all industry sectors.

The graduate scheme kick started with 6 weeks of intensive training covering Bluefin and consulting and technical skills. Following this we challenged with a full end-to-end project to design, develop, and implement a solution across several business systems. By having real project implementation experience I felt much more confident at my first day on client site.

Apart from the unrivalled training and exciting client opportunities, Bluefin also offers a culture that is hard to find in other global businesses. Bluefin is very focused on the wellbeing of its employees – which is one of its core values. I have a coach, a Training and & Development manager...and the opportunity to attend regular social club events - with the last one being cocktail and cupcake making! All of these factors make Bluefin ‘that’ company for me.

Paril Popat (2010)

Planning & Performance Management Consultant

If you’ve reached this section of the website you’re probably in a similar position to where I was last year – unsure of what was next but looking to join a graduate scheme. I joined Bluefin Solutions in October 2010 after completing a 4 year sandwich degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brunel University.

Consulting interested me as I always enjoyed new challenges and so the opportunity to embark on a career involving up-to-date technology projects and working with clients across a range of industries was appealing.

So what attracted me to Bluefin Solutions?

  • The website was a big selling point as it gave me insight into what working for the company would be really like!
  • The professional and quick response to my graduate application. Each step of the way I felt like the recruitment team where available and answered any question I had informatively.
  • The people in the company. On my assessment day I found the people to be exactly what they seem like on the website, friendly, helpful and insightful.
  • Being a small company I felt that it would offer me more development opportunity.

Graduate boot camp felt a bit like the challenges from ‘The Apprentice’ with the first week involving a trip to Bluefin’s Liverpool office. We worked on the train to prepare a presentation for a panel of Bluefin senior staff pretending to be clients on the support side of the business - luckily we were all HIRED!

It wasn’t long before the training became more technical, with each of us learning core SAP functionality and more in-depth capability specific SAP knowledge. After the six week boot camp, we were tasked with our first project – Project Santa. This involved each of us taking ownership of a particular role in delivering a solution. As the Lead Planning Consultant I was responsible for driving a technical solution from design, development, testing and support. This gave me a real sense of a project life cycle and some great experience that I can take with me onto client sites.

It’s also been a fantastic experience from a social perspective. Each month the Social Club organises events such as cup cake and cocktail making, trips to theme park, cinema and theatre outings and so on. We’ve also had a healthy dose of inter-capability grad foozeball challenges thrown into the mix.

If you are looking for a challenging career with great benefits and a feeling of achievement, then Bluefin Solutions Graduate scheme is definitely the way to go.

Bridie Stevens (2010)

BI Consultant

Having graduated from Royal Holloway University with a degree in Management and Spanish, a career in IT consulting was perhaps not the most obvious choice...but I’ve never looked back.

The Bluefin Solutions Graduate Scheme offered me a fantastic opportunity to carve out a career which allows me to focus on my strengths and continue to learn and grow.

Following a six week training programme the graduate intake tackled a complex internal project; we all relished the opportunity to take on a variety of roles from Architect to Project Manager and had the opportunity to put our technical and soft consultancy skills to the test.

Within less than five months of joining the graduate scheme I’ve already had the opportunity to go out onto client site as a fully trained and fully chargeable consultant. Bluefin Solutions places its trust in the graduates to rise to the challenge and this has allowed me to feel completely at ease even in unfamiliar territory.

I can’t recommend the Bluefin Solutions graduate scheme highly enough.

Brenton OCallaghan (2010)

NetWeaver Consultant

I started at Bluefin in October 2010 after graduating from University College Cork with a BSc in Computer Science. Needless to say, I’d never touched anything to do with SAP in my life!

In just a few months I’d already received excellent training and experience. First there was the intensive 6 week boot-camp followed by an internal project - Project Santa - which was designed to give us (the graduates) insight into life as an SAP consultant. It really prepared us for what we’d have to do as well as allowing us to become more familiar with the business, the technologies, the industry and the people.

Adjusting to the lifestyle of a consultant has been one of the most exciting parts of my experience to date. After six weeks I flew to Chicago to train with one of Bluefin’s Partners (and sample some of the best deep dish pizza I’ve ever tried). I’ve also travelled around the UK quite a bit.

Being a computer scientist naturally means I like trying the latest and greatest technologies and gadgets and trying to figure out what the big red button does! Since joining Bluefin there has never been a shortage of new technologies to try and exciting avenues to consider.

Bluefin Solutions is a great company to work for and in such a short space of time I’ve made what I know will be life-long friendships. The core of Bluefin is the people and the values and it’s what makes the company a great place to work. The graduate scheme is a fantastic opportunity – there really is no better a place to be!

Neil Bundy (2010)

BI Consultant

I joined Bluefin Solutions in October 2010, as part of the 2010 Graduate programme.

Between graduating and starting at Bluefin Solutions I was on a two year teaching programme in an inner-city secondary school. After completing this (and having broken up more than my fair share of classroom fights) I was keen to try something that challenged me in a different way.

In those two years I had the chance to really think about what it was I wanted to do. I was keen to find a position that offered responsibility, intellectual challenge and variety. I also wanted something with a strong focus on technology and with an organisation that would allow me to progress at my own rate.

Whilst researching options, many graduate schemes seemed to promise all of the above...but the reality I learned when scratching the surface was a different story. Whilst some places offered ‘variety’ for example, I found out on their induction days that variety simply referred to the type of spreadsheet you would be using on the job. At Bluefin I’ve already worked on two different projects with two different roles in the last 3 months.

As part of the graduate programme we were delivering a real project, the solution of which would be implemented within Bluefin in the first instance. It was pretty challenging at the start, especially as our technical knowledge was limited. However, Bluefin is very strong in its knowledge-sharing culture and this proved invaluable. Many times we had questions where we didn’t know where to start however everyone was willing to help out at any time. The solution was delivered successfully and the business has been really pleased.

I’ve already had the opportunity to work on a project with one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies.

If you’re interested in how technology can help solve business problems, you like variety and challenges and can see yourself fitting into Bluefin’s core values...then I strongly recommend you put in an application!

Nick Chambers (2007)

Planning Consultant

I've been at Bluefin Solutions for nearly three years having joined as a very calculused-out Maths Graduate from Warwick University without any knowledge of what SAP or Consultancy really was - so it was a tough interview!

But I went for it because it was a chance to join a growing organisation that would give me an opportunity to grow with it. We were the first intake of graduates so I knew it would be a fresh and dynamic process which would allow me to develop at my own pace and into my own area of interest; and not be held back by the static and uninspiring graduate schemes from larger companies.

In fact, it's been exactly that. I cut my teeth in the Business Intelligence stream before taking the jump to the Planning capability - this is a rapidly developing area for SAP at the moment in terms of software and client interest. Rather than providing reports enabling businesses to scrutinize their historical performance, Planning takes that further and helps businesses forecast and plan for the future based on the historical data - a much more involved challenge!

It's not all been suits and meetings though - I've enjoyed the added perks of consultancy travel, most noticeably Chicago and Amsterdam and less noticeably Watford and Northampton! But Bluefin Solutions has dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit at its core that is both encouraging and supportive throughout - most companies talk about values, cliché or not, but Bluefin solutions really does live their values.

Priya Vasishta (2007)

CRM Consultant

I joined Bluefin Solutions in 2007 having just completed a 4 year sandwich course studying Business Information Technology at Kingston University.

I remember feeling apprehensive about my lack of SAP knowledge and was pleasantly surprised at the training opportunities offered to get graduates up to speed. Within a few days we landed in Brussels for SAP Grad Boot Camp where we were introduced to the fundamentals of SAP.

I started off as a junior Customer Relationship Management (CRM) consultant and have had a variety of roles including; providing CRM support to our internal team and for clients such as Müller, Marstons and Abacus Lighting; as a Bluefin representative situated on client site providing 1st level support across their CRM, ERP and BI systems; to my present role implementing an SAP Trade Promotions Management (TPM) system at a leading FMCG company.

Some of the things I admire about Bluefin Solutions include:

  • The emphasis placed on knowledge exchange (via the ‘Bluefin KX’ portal) where everyone is encouraged to post questions and answers, no matter how trivial or complex, which can potentially benefit anyone/everyone in the company.
  • The frequency of company meetings and events such as ‘Golden Fridays’, the annual summer and Christmas parties for opportunities to meet fellow consultants and teammates, as the majority are often working at client sites.
  • The fact that everyone knows everyone and how new joiners are made to feel especially welcome and integrated into the company from day one.

I’d highly recommend Bluefin Solutions to any graduate with an interest in SAP and looking for a challenging role in an environment that prides itself on the motto “work hard, play hard”.

Bim Oyadare (2007)

SAP BW/Portal Consultant

I graduated from Brunel University in 2006 with a degree in Internet Engineering. I’d always known I wanted to be an IT Consultant as I enjoyed the idea of working on multiple projects with multiple challenges along the way.

My SAP journey started in 2007 when I was selected for the Graduate training programme. We were whisked off to an intense training session in Belgium for 3 weeks to introduce us to the basics of SAP. This set us in good stead for our career moving forward as we learned a lot about the various SAP components.

I initially started off within the Technology capability as a Portal consultant and have recently transitioned into the field of SAP BW which has proved to be very interesting. SAP BW is great for understanding general business operations as you assist clients with reporting on their key data. You also gain a keen understanding for data modelling concepts and how to efficiently query databases.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some great clients - Cadbury’s (yes, lots of chocolate, yum!), Sony Music (very fun), Yell and BAE to name a few. SAP projects provide a great way to see how a variety of industries work right from retail all the way to utilities.

Bluefin Solutions is not all work and no play however. We have a thriving social club which hosts regular events! Recently, we’ve learnt how to make pasta at Jamie Oliver’s store, seen the Brazil Brazil show at the South Bank Theatre, gone Go-Karting and we’re looking forward to so much more!

Lee Teik Jian (2007)

BI Consultant

Coming from the telecommunications industry, with little or no SAP skill, I was presented with the opportunities to join and grow with Bluefin Solutions - the UK’s largest dedicated SAP Consultancy. Being a part of a growing company, where both challenges and opportunities are presented, was something really exciting to me.

At Bluefin Solutions, you work with the top talents in SAP industry and thought leaders in the SAP space. We live the value of teamwork, culture of sharing. Learning opportunities are everywhere, classroom trainings, on-the-job trainings, certifications and so on.

Bluefin is also all about fun. We have series of parties and events like Summer Party, Christmas Party, Social Club activities and et cetera. We share quality time together not only as colleagues, but friends.

Come join us, and the next thing you know is, you’ve got a welcome pack at your doorstep!
