Resolution: I will formalise the business case for my BI projects

In the current climate IT budgets are facing increased pressure. Whilst large strategic BI projects are still going ahead, for example driving a performance management culture based on measures provided by BI, many tactical projects are facing tough competition. Only those offering clear quantifiable financial benefits will progress.

Unfortunately, many organisations do not formalise the benefits case for their BI projects. This can lead to wild expectations and disappointment with the outcome. Or worse, an over reliance on Excel based point solutions instead of BI.

Organisations that take time to put together a business case will find it easy to estimate the costs involved in a BI project. The benefits case however often relies on intangible factors that cannot be assigned a £ value. Examples are ‘better information’ or ‘improved decision making’. Whilst these are extremely valuable to an organisation, they are unlikely to provide a strong case for project funding in the current economic environment.

This article will show you how to build a case for the benefits of BI by identifying and grouping benefits and then applying an open and transparent valuation methodology to arrive at a £ value.
