Driven largely by the emergence of new technologies, evolving business models and heightened end-user expectations, how CIOs run their organisations has radically changed in the past few years. Instead of just managing existing IT investments, they are increasingly expected to help define and deliver growth strategies using the latest and hottest technologies such as analytics, mobile and cloud computing. 

However, a study by the Economist Business Unit finds that though IT teams are succeeding at improving business process efficiency, they are failing to take the next step in becoming a strategic partner for business.  This is a lost opportunity for organisations, especially when investing in technology is often the differentiator between success and failure. 

Business realities dictate that CIOs must continue to improve organisational excellence while simultaneously developing new technical, business and innovation capabilities. Basically, fly and build a plane at the same time because of pressures to create top-and bottom-line business value.

Recent examples of our work

Created a SAP Enterprise Performance Management roadmap for a global consumer business

We worked in partnership with the client, and its main services partner, in a subject matter expert capacity to develop a strategic SAP Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) roadmap for the executive office. The aim was to qualify cross-functional, global business requirements, and benefits and priorities, for the business units and central corporate functions. We then developed a comprehensive guide on how to best deliver the end state as part of a programme of business led projects.

Supported Business Intelligence strategy development for an IT technology provider

We were engaged to assess the current Business Intelligence (BI) system, comprising of SAP BW and related technologies, in order to determine whether the system and related processes were fit for current purpose as well as planned future expansion. A set of assessment criteria was established which incorporated best practice considerations. The final report included detailed analysis, findings, and a recommended roadmap for change. A business risk map which indicated the current state of the solution, as well as projected future state (based on the recommended approach) was also included, enabling the client to proceed in a structured way.

Lit-up a power company’s IT application strategy

We carried out a review of the company’s IT application landscape and future business needs, via a high level engagement based on interviews with members of the senior management team and the IT services function. The landscape included SAP as the ERP core along with other applications. The objective was to define a prioritised 3-5 year roadmap for how the application landscape should evolve. Drivers included the need to optimise SAP ROI and a requirement to introduce a more consistent and common systems footprint across the plants, some of which had been acquired through acquisition. The recommended roadmap included a dozen streams of application transformation activity, including SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM), SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), SAP Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and mobility.

Defined an SAP application and license strategy using pace layering

We worked with a FTSE250 professional services company to unlock the potential of its SAP landscape and provide the business with the enterprise IT agility needed to respond to growth ambitions and market opportunities. Using Gartner’s pace layering, an architecture model and architecture guidelines were developed which identified systems of record tied into business roadmaps to provide a stable core SAP foundation. Systems of differentiation and innovation were also identified and tied into business roadmaps along with recommendations on how to provide the necessary common security architecture, integrated monitoring and management and ‘connective tissue’ between the layers. In tandem the pace layered strategy was tied into the SAP license model to identify best use of the existing SAP license agreements which provided the CIO with information to support discussions on future licensing requirements.
